A Letter from the Executive Director

Those of us affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula are passionate about it because we believe that every child deserves a chance to achieve his or her full potential. When I reflect on my own background, I realize how lucky I have been. I had 2 caring parents, college educated, who made sure I did well in school and made the right decisions. Now I’m a father with 3 children who are fortunate to attend one of the finest public school systems in the world. They receive caring attention from their teachers and enjoy school. They have great after-school activities like soccer, art, and chess. My wife and I read to them - lots. We are blessed to live in a community where these opportunities exist.

But most of the youth who come to our clubs are not as fortunate. They grow up around crime and violence. Many of their parents don’t speak English. Many of their parents are working multiple jobs. Some of them aren't raised by their parents. They’re probably below grade level in school. 50% of their peers won’t even graduate from high school. And a recent study found that African-American males in their 20s who don't graduate from high school are more likely to be in jail than have a job.

At the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula, we provide our members with some of the opportunities from which families like mine benefit. We provide our members with a safe place to come after school, help with their homework, tutoring, art classes, music instruction, computers, sports leagues, and exposure to the world beyond their immediate neighborhood. Most importantly, we provide them with meaningful relationships with caring adults. All young people deserve to have hope and opportunity, and we provide it. We have an amazing team of staff, volunteers and Board members who are committed to inspiring and enabling our members to achieve their full potential as productive, responsible and caring citizens.

Thank you for your interest in learning more about the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula. Please come visit one of our clubhouses some afternoon; we’d love to show you the impact we’re having!
