Community We Serve
The neighborhoods we serve - East Palo Alto, the Belle Haven section of Menlo Park, and the North Fair Oaks section of Redwood City - are ethnically diverse with residents proud of their different cultures and traditions. While in many ways the Peninsula is one large community, in other ways there is great disparity between the neighborhoods served by BGCP and those immediately adjacent.
POPULATION
Approximately 14,500 school age children live in the neighborhoods we serve.
INCOME
In the United States, 14% of all children live in poverty. That figure is even higher for the children we serve. Fully 17% of the children from East Palo Alto and the North Fair Oaks section of Redwood City live in poverty (as defined by the 2002 U.S. Census).
Median per capita income for families in East Palo Alto and the North Fair Oaks section of Redwood City is $14,000 and $18,000 respectively. By comparison, median per capita income for families in Palo Alto and Atherton is $56,000 and $112,000 respectively.
ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT
Approximately 50% of the students from East Palo Alto and Ravenswood do not graduate from high school.
7% of students in North Fair Oaks have a parent who graduated from college.
80% of children who live in the neighborhoods served by in the BGCP receive scores below the 50% percentile on the SAT 9 standardized tests.
ETHNICITY
East Palo Alto and the Belle Haven section of Menlo Park are located in the Ravenswood School District. The ethnic composition of the Ravenswood School District is approximately 65% Latino, 25% African American, and 10% Pacific Islander or other.
The North Fair Oaks section of Redwood City is predominantly Latino.
