In the areas the Club serves, 80% of children score below proficient in State standardized reading and math exams and upwards of 70% of youth do not graduate from high school. To help address these issues and more, the Club partners with the local school districts, schools and even families and hosts LEARN (Literacy, Engagement and Achievement Right Now), a multi-faceted education initiative across our clubhouses and school sites. LEARN at the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Peninsula provides youth with the following:
- Academic Instruction in Reading and Math
- Mentoring
- Tutoring
- Technology Based Learning
- Daily Homework Assistance
- Enrichment Activities focused on the Arts, Science, Technology, Life Skills, Sports and more.
LEARN also includes Achievement Matters, an initiative that recognizes participating youth for their academic achievement and leadership as well as College Bound which is designed to help youth in plan and prepare for high school and college.
As part of the Club's commitment to youth and education, the Club hosts two Community Schools, which are alternative high schools for youth who have not succeeded in traditional settings and also runs workshops in local schools.
