ACADEMICS

Alejandra, age 9, East Palo Alto

“When we moved to the United States a year ago, I didn't speak any English. My grades in school were bad because my Mom and my Dad only speak Spanish, and they couldn't help me with my homework.

I like coming to the Boys and Girls Clubs because I get to practice my English a lot, and there are grown-ups here who can help me with my homework. I really like to use SuccessMaker to help with math and English. It is hard work, but it is also like playing a fun game. I think it is working because last year I got a C in math, but this year I got an A+! Now math is my favorite subject. And I also think that my English is pretty good!"

Did you know that 50% of the students in our communities do not graduate from high school? That the vast majority score below the 50th percentile nationally in both reading and math? There is little doubt that the children we serve need academic help.

However, the resources of our public schools are already stretched thin. Schools are pressed to meet even the most basic of needs, such as providing textbooks for every student. Many parents work full time and are unavailable to help their kids with their homework after school. Some parents are willing and available to help, but are unable due to their own educational or English language limitations.

The BGCP has developed an Academics Program to address the needs of our youth. We provide personal attention, up-to-date technology, and innovative programs that stimulate minds and enable success.
