SOCIAL EDUCATION

Chris, age 13, East Palo Alto

“I used to get in a lot of trouble. I talked back to my teachers, and I picked fights with the kids at school. I got a lot of detentions and suspensions. And when I went home, I would fight with my stepbrother.

I started coming to the Boys and Girls Clubs about four years ago. I found out that its a lot easier not to get into fights when there are adults around all the time. If I start to get mad, one of the staff pulls me aside and talks to me. I think that's good, because it teaches me to think before I act. I don't get into fights at school anymore, and I haven't gotten a detention or suspension in a long time. Home is better, too, because now I can walk away from an argument with my stepbrother!"

After the homework is done and the team practices have finished, kids just need to “hang out.” At BGCP, we provide a safe and entertaining place for kids to interact with their peers and relax. They can play a variety of casual games, eat a snack, and develop social interaction skills under the guidance of caring adults.

The social rooms also provide an opportunity for our staff to engage our members informally, build relationships, and assess their needs. We can identify kids who may need more attention, or encourage those who are ready to take leadership positions within The Club.

The social rooms are more than just a great place for kids to have fun and talk to each other. We encourage members to appreciate the world outside their community by celebrating holidays like Cinco de Mayo and events like Black History Month. We also discuss real-life topics, such as racial tolerance, home safety, and personal health, to expand our members’ awareness of the role they play in developing into healthy, productive citizens.
