Volunteering - it is a way of giving and receiving
This quarter our volunteers have been hard at work leading literacy programs, coaching basketball, tutoring and instructing Jr. Engineers. Take a look at a few of the memory-making moments from this quarter.
“This volunteer experience will offer: A reminder that a small effort on my part makes something possible that might not otherwise happen and there is huge human potential that exists in hese kids.“ --Holly

EPA Club Members are Branching Out
Saturday, February 11th a group of teen members from our Moldaw-Zaffaroni Clubhouse along with Clubs staff Arash, Isis and Amal braved the elements- pouring rain - to plant a whopping 37 cherry and oak trees along the Bayshore freeway in East Palo Alto. The project was done in conjunction with Canopy, a Palo Alto based organization that advocates for the urban forest and works to educate, inspire and engage the community as stewards of young and mature trees. Dave Muffly, Canopy's arborist, said that the EPA Clubhouse group was his best volunteer group in almost a decade.
Girls are Here to Make a Change
Recently, the Clubs partnered with Girls for a Change, a national non-profit that empowers girls to create social change. We have since offered the program to teen girls at our Menlo Park and East Palo Alto Clubhouses. Through this program, girls from our Menlo Park Clubhouse are working on a project that focuses on abuse: emotional, physical and verbal. The girls are researching these sensitive subjects via internet, television and books. In addition, they will be interviewing teachers, professional experts (both counselors and doctors), children in the community and adults who have had personal challenges with any form of abuse. The video component will be aired on local programming stations and be presented to the Ravenswood School District. Hopefully, the video will be approved by the district to be used as an educational tool for kids. The video aims to help young women recognize abuse and seek help, if needed. The girls hope that by watching this video their peers will be able to rise above the many forms of abuse and ultimately be more successful in life. Stay tuned to see the video, which will be complete at the end of May.
