"I had always heard that the BGCP was such a great organization to volunteer at because the rewards are so tangible; you can SEE the smiles on the kids' faces when you come in each week.  It completely exceeded my expectations, though.  I can really see the difference that I am making in these kids' lives. Volunteering at BGCP has showed me how powerful human connections can be.  Different people from very different backgrounds can have an amazing and inexplicable connection over the simplest things in life, like reading a book, playing catch, or even just a high-five!  The relationships that the kids at BGCP build with the volunteers and staff are astounding.  You have to experience it for yourself to understand how powerful it truly is and what a difference it makes in the lives of the kids AND the volunteers." -Jenny Parker, Reading Wizards Volunteer

Volunteer Spotlights

This quarter our volunteers have been hard at work at our clubhouses and school sites. Volunteers have taken leadership to new heights at the Clubs. Here are a few of the ways they have been involved: Leading literacy programs, coaching basketball camps, tutoring and instructing a Jr. Engineers program. Please take a look at just a few of the memory-making moments this quarter:

During the school hours, Holly Welstein is an Instructional Aide at Addison Elementary School . However, she is known as “Reading Wizard” during her weekly class at our East Palo Clubhouse. She leads a literacy based program where each child takes turns reading aloud. The students read books from a series throughout the quarter. Together they practice pronunciation, improve their vocabulary and learn how to make reading fun! After class, Holly then uses her teaching skills to tutor an ESL student. She is making new strides every day with her new found friend, Arturo.

This volunteer experience will offer: A reminder that a small effort on my part makes something possible that might not otherwise happen and there is huge human potential that exists in these kids.“ – Holly

Jeff Hurst, better known as Coach, inspires a team of new athletes during basketball camp this quarter. Coach Jeff is a Masters of Business student at local Stanford University . He was a club kid in Arlington , Texas and knows first hand the benefits of a youth athletic program.

“My favorite part of coaching is seeing the kids make progress learning basketball. The kids all try so hard and are really excited to be learning and playing. I will always remember how grateful the kids are for the help and time of volunteers.” – Coach Jeff

Benjamin Addicott is like no other tutor at our CNG-Flood School. He comes from an undergraduate and masters degree in Nuclear Engineering and is awaiting acceptance to medical school. He spends his afternoons twice a week tutoring a group of students. He originally signed on for one on one tutoring and quickly the kids responded to him. His original 1 hour, one person sessions quickly grew to 5-8 students on a regular basis for a couple hours at time. After tutoring sessions he often stays to reward his students with a game of basketball.

If you can “guide and inspire one child to develop the life skills and attitudes they need to reach their full potential…” You might be able to change a life. If you can empower a group…You might be able to change a community.
